Your muscles and joints can tighten up quickly when you spend several hours in the car, so it helps to prepare for a long drive with targeted stretches. Using gentle movements before you head out, at rest stops along the way, and after you reach your destination can improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and make extended seat time much more comfortable. Follow these tips before heading out on your spring or summer road trip.

Stretches to Try to Prepare for a Long Drive

Warm Up Before You Go

Taking a few minutes to activate key muscle groups before you begin long-distance driving helps ease strain later:

  1. Hip Flexor Stretch: Step one foot forward and, keeping the back leg straight, lean into your hips to lengthen the muscles that tighten from sitting.
  2. Hamstring Stretch: Sit on the edge of a seat or bench, extend one leg, and reach toward your toes while keeping your back long to open up the back of your thigh.

These movements prepare your lower body for extended sitting and support stability as you get on the road.

Move During Rest Stops

Stopping regularly gives you a chance to refresh and reset your body. Make time in your road trip itinerary to stop so that you can do these muscle-loosening stretches:

  • Shoulder Rolls: With feet planted, roll your shoulders forward and back in slow circles to reduce tension in your upper back.
  • Calf Stretch: Stand tall, extend one leg back, and press the heel toward the ground to improve circulation in your lower legs.

Walking around a bit after each stop also supports overall circulation and can help prevent stiffness from building up.

Simple Stretches You Can Do in the Car

Even while seated, small movements help relieve tension during a long ride:

  • Seated Spinal Twist: Place both hands on the wheel or seat edge and gently rotate your torso left and right to encourage spine mobility.
  • Neck Side Stretch: Tilt your head toward each shoulder to ease tightness in the neck and upper shoulders.

These subtle movements make it easier to stay comfortable until your next break.

Stretch After You Arrive

Once you’re at your destination, repeat a few of the pre‑drive stretches to help your body recover after a long period of sitting. A forward bend or lying supine with bent knees helps relax your spine and legs.
